The exhibition celebrates
over 50 glorious years of Sheilas work, and conveys her wide range
of animation and painting in a successful career that stretches from
childhood to present day.
It was the late fifties when she studied Fine Art at Sunderland Art
College. "Today Students have a vast choice of courses ,in those
days photography was something done in a small dark cupboard under the
stairs and animation was not even dreamed of as a suitable subject for
a college course."
Since then Sheilas career has flourished. In 1980, following 20
years in teaching, she gave up her post as Head of Creative Studies
at King George Comprehensive School to pursue animation on a full-time
professional basis. This led to setting up the company Sheila Graber
Animation Limited in 1996 with her Business Manager and fellow Director
Jen Miller.
Sheilas award-winning animated shorts have now been seen in over
25 countries on World TV and by a diverse audience in locations such
as the Tate Gallery, Open University and BBCs Blue Peter. Her
aim has always been to use animation as a means of communication- not
just for entertainment - but for education and healing too.
Perhaps the most succinct description of Sheilas career is by
Olwyn Hocking, Community Web Producer and former Head of Regional Programmes
for BBC and Tyne Tees Television, who says,
"Sheila's imaginative approach is admired far and
wide has won her the respect of her peers. However, she is remarkable
for never allowing it to crowd out her commitment to help newcomers.
She clearly wants to help as many people as possible share the sheer
pleasure of animation - we're lucky and proud to have her here in the
North East."
